A 129 Mangusta - Italian Attack Helicopter

The A 129 "Mangusta" (Mongoose), a helicopter built only in Italy, is the main combat aircraft of the Italian Army. It is a two-seat attack aircraft, able to carry out missions supporting ground troops, advanced scouting and anti-tank or anti-helicopter actions. When armed with air-to-air missiles, it is even able to engage enemy jets in dogfights. This characteristic shows just how capable the helicopter is. The infantry units depend on airmobile support. It enables them to carry out more effective action against the enemy. The helicopter is ideally suited for this purpose because it is a powerful and fast aircraft. which can take off and land in a small area. This realisation created the need for an adequate airmobile component for the ground Armed Forces. Consequently, the Italian Armed Forces were among the first in the world to have at their disposal substantial airmobile operational units.
