Imperial Japanese Army Air Units Battlefield Photograph Collection


Photo 5: An "Otsu-shiki" Model 1 Reconnaissance Plane (Salmson 2A2) operates in the snow in October, 1922. Photo 6: Aircrew (left side) preparing to head out from Tokorozawa air base in Saitama Prefecture (just north of Tokyo) on a long-range, experimental flight to Pingtung, Taiwan. Photo 7: Having safely returned Tokorozawa from Pingtung, Capts. Hanazawa and Nakamura of the second "han" report to their superior officer about the flight. Photo 8: A Type 87 Light Bomber (Mitsubishi 2MB1 ) seen undergoing maintenance. It was one of the first IJA aircraft to be named under the new system which required the last two digits of the imperial year to be used as the type's official name. Photo 9: Here's a Type 88 Model 2 Reconnaissance Plane (Kawasaki KDA-2) seen on April 17,1932, named "Aikoku #10." It was purchased with funds contributed from Korean sources.
