BBC History 2011-10

ON 18 APRIL 1942,16 B-25 Mitchell bombers took off from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet in the Pacific ocean. Their mission was to strike against military and industrial targets in Japan. While the Doolittle Raid was of negligible military value, in the wake of Pearl Harbor it was designed to show the USA had the capability to hit back. However, there was a catch. The airmen knew they couldn't land on the ship and so they had to fly on to China to touch down. As one of the documentaries in a new 13-part series exploring courage against the odds relates, the men knew they might not make it home at all. In the event, most did, and the five remaining survivors talk about their experiences. A key aspect of the series is to explore how what happened shaped and changed the course of the war. For example, the siege of Tobruk, when Australian general Morshead and his Ninth Division held off the Afrika Corps and slowed down Rommel at a time when his forces were in the ascendancy in north Africa.
